The resource link of the disability Webpages

The website is clear and easy to navigate around. There seems like there is a good range of support for students. I was inducted onto the  PGCert in October, 7  months later the assessment hasn’t been finalised yet. I wish I was given the opportunity to access and apply back then, it would have save me a lot of waiting weeks as the demand is high. I’m into the second term of my course and hopefully I’m nearly there. I mentioned before that application process was long winded and spending nearly 3 hours online being tested on my weakness to be told my weakness is confirmed was challenging. Half way through the assessment I was tired, exhausted and to be honest I didn’t want to do anymore challenging assessments, but I had to continue. My dyslexic brain had shut down and the will to sit still for so long became daunting.  There is a video on the disability services web page called  ‘The social model of disability at UAL’ and listening to the comments, I felt they all sounded exactly like me.

I would implement visiting the disability webpages asap for students who needs this service. It needs to be a foundational topic. Its how you start your course right. I didn’t realise you couldn’t have access to the late assessment submission until your disability requirement was finalised and accepted. Luckly at that time I was able to meet the first hand in date out of fear missing it and failing. Had I taken it upon my own ideas and assume I automatically qualify for the EAC date. I would have failed.

Resource film by Christine Sun Kim

Watching the Vimeo film link by Christine Sun Kim, opened up my eyes to her disability taking ownership and utilising her disability to make it work for herself was inspirational. Seeing how she maneuvered herself around life to make it work. With frustrations on trying to communicate ideas with her parents and feeling suffocated was sad. Seeing Christine Sun Walking in the street with hundreds of people passing by made me realise I could have easily been one of those people. Maybe not even noticing that someone is going through the notions of their disability of being deaf. I couldn’t imagine not being able to express my self without sound.

Blogging activity 1: Disability

Inclusive practices, a topic that needs to be explored, one that shouldn’t be over looked. How will you know if your being inclusive as a lecture if you’ve never had to address it or been challenged in your thinking within a particular area.

We should all learn now or we could feel the consequences later if we encounter a problem if something goes wrong or against us. The question is how do you attend to everyone’s needs and support. Do we know where to go? Do we know what’s available? Have we explored the options?
I have an understanding that not all disabilities are visual and as the years have progressed it’s been amazing that some organisations/companies have recognised this, accepted and adapted to making sure they are supporting in the best way they can. The topic I feel is friendlier than before. It’s a high possibility that the majority of intake of students will have a disclosed or undisclosed disability so it would be imperative that I introduce them to as much resources as possible.

Firstly, the student services disability and dyslexia. In my experience in using the service, the demand is quite high and getting an appointment could take a number of weeks, even months, so getting the information and website links across for an appointment needs to be done immediately to avoid a longer wait. (Owens, S) 4 months after being diagnosed, I’m still waiting for the Study Needs Assessment from SFE. What hope there is for young students, who are not members of staff and studying on PgCert course.”

My reflection on using the service, being assessed was quite challenging, a number of questions in a first stage interview setting, then weeks later to the online process of 2.45 to 3 hours long, sitting in one spot on an assessment with multiple repetitive tasks boring and quite challenging.

I could apply the selected resources to my teaching practise, by running workshops on disabilities, sharing open discussions on some of the known disabilities that could be highlighted on the course. Sharing the Vimeo video and resource links I have been provided. Setting break out groups to highlight discussions. Without labelling or signalling anyone out we could write anonymously on post-it notes and reflect on them, having discussions on how to get support.

Business Design Management LCC

Year 2 students

I am absolutely enjoying being in the classes of the BDM students. I feel at home.
Working with and supporting individuals on their proposed projects. It was great to sit with them brain storming and discussing ideas.

I approached a student in particular who wasn’t really engaging and was sat quiet listening. I asked her what are your thoughts and ideas were towards the project.
She said she had none.
I found ways to challenge her thinking , I asked her what she like and what problems she though she could resolve, I asked her a number or questions that would trigger ideas and concepts, before you know it a great flow of conversations and suggestions within 10mins she had 3 solutions.

Wow”

That was amazing. I was so happy, I was able to help.

A Friday afternoon in the BDM class

Microteach Session

I prepared for my micro teach session and it was based on fonts and emotions. How do I feel about being observed? Sometimes my first initial thought is, oh no all eyes will be on me, try not be nervous.

Most of the time I try to start with an engaging icebreaker to relax the room. I‘m always trying to make sure as many people as possible have smiled and laughed within the icebreaker.

What are learners going to be doing, what is the influence I’m trying to bring across and what is my Influence as a teacher? The activity of fonts and emotions was to bring an understanding of how and why they are used and where they came from.

The idea of the activity is to be able to go though the process of identifying and choosing fonts that would influence a designated theme. For example if you were creating a piece of promotional material for children’s books or an event, the title of the characters that would demonstrate this, is something that looks fun and playful. Compared to if you were to choose something for a horror story. It would be good to emphasise that emotion and feeling.

Dafont.com

They were happy to experience this website as a new tool/recourse. Some had not come across this site before. My area of concern was if there were not enough laptops available but as they were paired up, it all worked well.

Note to self: Voice record my live feedback for future reference

Analysing peers, micro teaching

Today was a nice session of observation micro teaching.

Perfume analysing, hand crafted cats and t shirts proofing.  With a  valuable lesson of how to problem solve moving an expensive heavy object and the right ways to lift. It probably helped that it was a group that I’ve met before but when you’re in the hot seat all eyes on you.

Today I learnt that there are 3 parts to perfumes and colognes Base, heart and top there is also 4 categories of scents amber, florals and compositions. Also, no two perfumes smell the same

Hand crafter Cat, giving feedback to a child what is the best way? 50% 50%, sandwich feedback marking criteria, self-reflection from the student. Just so you don’t misinterpret what they wanted to achieve you could ask them what were they looking for to produce in a result. A suggestion from a peer be honest, if its crap it just is. But you can do better next time. What do you plan on doing next time. This way it allows them to manage the truth and society in the future they won’t always feel like they are the best as they won’t always will be. Being told no and its nots good enough can work towards making you stronger or aiming higher.

My take away nuggets, Note to self.

I could have brought in some examples of fonts like chocolate bars, magazines and newspapers. I could have explained more about the font styles serif and sans serif.

Methods of Teaching

• Lectures
• Small group teaching
• One to one
• Presentation review crits

We can benefit from all four in different ways. Do I have a favourite?
It depends on how I feel and the subject at the time.

Some individuals may have a preferred style of lecturing, on some occasions some may be better than others, depending on the learning style of the student. As a lecturer, it’s great to accommodate them all and be diverse, flexible and adaptable.

Pros

Cons

• What do I have to do?
• What steps are needed to complete it and get there
• What research can I look into to assist me
• What will I learn aims and objectives
• How is my wellbeing while approaching this?
• Can I team up with someone, so we can support each other?

Climat change

Are we thinking about it?

Are we looking after the planet for the future?

“Think of it as if we are the ancestors for a generation 200 years after us”.
Matthew, J. (2023)

A true statement what would the planet look like after I have left it. What would the future say about me and my generation that lived in 2023.

I am happy to recycle.
I feel responsible

Someone mentioned sometimes logging in from home effects the carbon foot print they have to keep their machines logged in but at the same time fuel consumption will build up. If students can’t afford to travel in, it can be expensive.

Can we just slow down, It’s a rippling effect on everything, no time to think.

Whats the value system, “why are we creating something for the industry, is it ego or is it to change the world” Matthew, J. (2023)
